Around 1900, the trained cigar maker moved to Hamburg, where he met and fell in love with the non-Jewish Auguste Kolle, who accepted her husband’s faith when they married. Their son Gustav was born in 1906, and the following year the family moved to Stuttgart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here Mr. Karschinierow found a managerial position as a foreman in the Waldorf-Astoria cigar factory. Their daughter Jeanette was born in 1908. In 1929, during the economic crisis, the company was bought out by Reemtsma and Lazar Karschinierow was made redundant. He opened his own tobacco store with a lending library, which suffered a boycott at the beginning of the Nazi era.<\/p>\n\n\n

During the pogrom night of November 9\/10, 1938, Nazis destroyed the store and the business had to be closed. Another blow came in October 1939 when Lazar’s wife Auguste died. Their son Gustav was able to flee to France and survived the Nazi era there.<\/p>\n\n\n

In February 1942, Mr. Karschinierow was sent to the Wei\u00dfenstein Castle forced residence and deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp together with his daughter Jeanette in August. On May 4, 1945, a few days before liberation, Lazar Karschinierow died as a result of the murderous living conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
